Florida flame azalea aka Orange azalea (Rhododendron austrinum) is a deciduous long-lived perennial flowering shrub found in hardwood, floodplain, slope forests, bluffs, and ravines in North Florida. Its native zones are 8-9A - so central Florida is a stretch for this plant. The showy flowers are bright orange that blooms in the spring. They can get 3 - 10 feet tall and as wide as 3-8 feet. So allow them some room to spread out. It prefers highly acidic to acidic soil conditions and performs well as an understory plant as it likes partial shade conditions. It attracts hummingbirds and pollinators. It is not salt tolerant.
The plant is poisonous if ingested.
