Native Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) is an herbaceous perennial that grows low about half a foot tall and spreads approximately readily by runners making it a good groundcover. Plant it in rich, sandy loam with medium moisture for it thrive, and it will tolerate full sun to partial shade. It has showy, white flowers in the spring and small but tasty edible fruit in the summer. It's deer and drought tolerant but you may have a race with the birds and other wildlife to get to the fruit before they do.
