Tropical Hydrangea (Dombeya wallichi) also commonly known as the Pink Ball Tree, is a fast‑growing small to medium tree or large shrub originating from India, East Africa, and Madagascar. It is celebrated for its fragrant clusters of pink, ball‑shaped flowers, typically 4 to 6 inches across, that hang from the branches during fall and winter. These blooms last for months, fading from bright pink to pale pink and finally light brown, creating long‑lasting seasonal interest. Its large, velvety, heart‑shaped leaves remain on the plant year‑round, giving it a lush, tropical presence even in winter.

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall with a spread of 20 to 25 feet, it forms a rounded, dense canopy that makes it an excellent specimen plant, patio tree, or focal point in the landscape. Its roots are non‑invasive, allowing it to be planted near buildings or outdoor living spaces. This vigorous grower thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soils including clay, sand, loam, slightly alkaline, acidic, occasionally wet, or well‑drained conditions. Once established, it shows moderate drought tolerance, though it performs best with weekly or bi‑weekly watering during the summer.

Tropical Hydrangea is very low maintenance but does require protection from frost and freezing temperatures. After a light frost, the foliage may take on a bronze tint. Pruning should be done in spring to mid‑summer, immediately after flowering and before new summer growth begins. It can be trimmed as needed to maintain size and shape, and spent winter blooms can be removed to keep the plant looking tidy.

With its showy winter flowers, evergreen foliage, and easy‑care nature, this is a standout choice for gardeners seeking year‑round beauty and a spectacular cold‑season display. Tropical Hydrangea is a pollinator magnet, especially for bees and is a winter bloomer in our area.
