Rayless Sunflower (Helianthus radula), is a unique sunflower in that it doesn't have apparent ray florets on its flowerhead. The leaves are thick, hairy and rough with a round shape. The stems are also hairy. Surprised its common name wasn't Hairy rayless sunflower. This plant naturally occurs in sandy upland areas, roadsides, pine flatwoods, and savannahs. As the name implies, it is a sun lover that prefers full sun. It will grow to about 2' tall. Pollinators enjoy its blooms in late spring to early fall when this plant produces its flowerheads. Mix with some native grasses in a sunny area for a nice look in your sunny garden.
