Royal Catchfly (Silene regia) is a showy perennial with scarlet-red flowers that may grow to approximately 2-4 feet and spreads approximately 12-15 inches. It requires full sun with well-drained, loam or sandy soil. It is drought resistant. This plant has sticky hairs that resemble fly paper which helps to prevent ants from reaching the flower to steal its nectar. Ruby-throat hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers and it is a great nectar source for swallowtails and other large butterflies.
