This is a herbaceous perennial, native to moist meadow and open woodland. It is the most common blue-eyed grass of the eastern United States, and is also cultivated as an ornamental.  It grows to about 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads only about 1'. Its blueish/purple blooms in the spring and likes  full sun. It has a showy flower that does well as a ground cover. Best grown in medium moisture, well-drained loam or sandy soil. Prefers consistently moist soils that do not dry out, but drainage must be good. It will self-seed in optimum growing conditions. The plants should be trimmed back after blooms are spent to avoid any unwanted self-seeding. Plants can be divided after 2-3 years.
