Crossvine is a long-lived (up to 50 years) fast-growing perennial and evergreen vine with dark green foliage.  It can climb very long and far if it gets its way. It gets its name due to the cross-section of its stem shows a cross-shaped pattern. This is a showy bloomer anytime from February through late June. It occurs naturally in Florida in mesic to dry hammocks, floodplain forests and dry hardwood forests. It is most commonly pollinated by hummingbirds and attracts some bees and butterflies, as well. The beautiful display of tubular flower clusters have tubes 2-3" long, which are a burnt orange/reddish-orange color with yellowish throats. The fruit is a long brown bean-like capsule that splits when dry exposing its winged seeds.  It likes full sun to full shade, however, it will yield more flowers in full sun.  It prefers moist but well-drained soils. You can propagate with seeds and cuttings.  Due to the fast growth rate (up to 50 feet and 6 to 9 foot spread) and potential size, be aware this is not a great vine for a small area. It is a high-climbing, twining vine that clings by tendrils. This vine does very well in naturalistic landscapes, can be trained on a fence, wall, trellis and also trees.  It is not salt tolerant. It likes sand or loam soil types.
