Yaupon holly is a wonderful Florida native, but there are also several cultivars (aka nativars) offering a variety of forms. One of our favorite nativars is the attractive Dwarf Yaupon holly, which resembles the non-native boxwood. This attractive evergreen shrub with a grayish-green leaf can grow to approximately 24- 36 inches tall. They are very slow growers and rarely need trimming. While many like to keep them trimmed into a ball shape for a formal look, they can also be allowed to grow out a little and you will have a hint of red in the new growth for a more casual look. It produces white flowers which appear in the spring but the plant does not produce berries. Preferring full sun to partial shade it can thrive in drought to moist soil, making it a great choice for our Florida seasonal conditions. It is drought tolerant once established. Some have purchased it to trim it like a Bonsai. A very versatile holly!
