Coastal Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) is a low maintenance shrub that typically grows 3-6 feet high with a spread of approximately 4-6 feet. However, some have grown as high as 8 feet. Enjoy showy, white, fragrant flowers bloom mid to late summer followed by dark brown seed capsules which remain throughout winter. It prefers full sun to partial shade but will also tolerate full shade. Although it will tolerate clay soil, it thrives best if planted in medium to wet acidic, sandy soil. This is a great nectar source for pollinators, especially butterflies and bees.
