Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet') is a compact shrub with showy, glossy garnet-burgundy leaves. It can reach 3-4 feet tall and spread 4-6 feet wide. It produces white, fragrant flowers that bloom from May to June and attracts butterflies. This low maintenance shrub will tolerate full sun to partial shade and should be planted in medium to wet clay soil. It flowers best in full sun. Once established, it is drought and flood tolerant.
