Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is a fast-growing native tree with fiery personality and ecological charm. Reaching heights of 45–50 feet and spreading 35–50 feet wide, this majestic beauty bursts into brilliant red flowers and fruit in early spring, signaling the season’s arrival with vibrant color.
Thriving in full sun and preferring moist soils rich in sand or organic muck, Red Maple is as adaptable as it is striking. Beyond its ornamental appeal, it plays a vital role in local ecosystems—serving as a larval host for the Imperial Moth, Cecropia Silkmoth, and the Rosy Maple Moth. Its flowers also attract buzzing bees, making it a pollinator-friendly powerhouse. It is one of the few Florida natives that changes color in the fall.
