Fakahatchee Grass (Tripsacum dactyloides) is a perennial grass that grows 4-6 feet tall by 2-4 feet wide. It produces yellow, orange, red flowers and yellow or brown fruit. Plant this ornamental grass in full sun to part shade in moist but well-drained sand or loam. Deer eat the seeds. This ornamental grass provides cover for small mammals, birds and reptiles. It is the larval host for skipper butterflies: the three-spotted skipper (Cymaenes tripunctus), clouded skipper (Lerema accius) and Byssus skipper (Problema byssus).
