Florida scrub frostweed aka Florida scrub sunrose - Crocanthemum nashii, commonly known, is a charming, low-growing perennial wildflower. Endemic to Florida’s coastal plain, it is perfectly adapted to the hot, dry, nutrient-poor soils of xeric scrublands and sandhills. It has upright perennial stems that grow 8-16” and only gets to about 1.5’ tall. The flowers are a bright yellow and bloom primarily from spring into early summer. The flowers open in the morning and are usually closed by early afternoon. It also produces flower buds later in the year that do not open but are how the plant ensures seed production. It requires full sun and thrives in dry, well-draining sand (Florida soil)! This plant is extremely drought-tolerant and well-suited for hot, dry regions like South Tampa.
