It features compound leaves with three leaflets and light purple to pale blue pea-like flowers that bloom from spring through fall. It grows in well-drained sandy upland habitats like sandhills, scrub, flatwoods, and upland woods. In the wild it is found exclusively in northern and central peninsular Florida. While they do not have tendrils, they are effective climbers. They may die back in the winter in our area, but re-emerge in the spring. They propagate easily from seed, but can take a while to germinate and likely require a little stratification.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is in the same genus as the Spurred butterfly pea (Centrosema virinianum). Spurred butterfly pea is more common in habitats that are less xeric and thrived in landscapes with sprinklers. While the leaves of both plants have 3 leaflets making them difficult to tell apart when they are not in bloom (other than habitat location in the wild), there are small differences in the two species flowers with the lower lobe of the Sand butterfly pea being upside down and shorter than that of of the Spurred butterfly pea. Both species share the white nectar guide strip on the lower lip which guides pollinators to the nectar source that is deep inside the bloom.
