Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) is a tree noted for its aromatic and interesting foliage. It may grow to approximately 30-60 feet tall and 25-40 feet wide. Sassafras trees produce yellow flowers and blue or black fruit. Plant it in full sun or part shade in well-drained clay, loam or sand that is highly acidic to neutral. Birds consume the fruit and this tree attracts pollinators and is the host plant for three butterflies: Palamedes, Tiger and Spicebush Swallowtails.
