Spiked Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) is a short-lived perennial that produces purple flower spikes that bloom in summer to early fall. The stalks can require staking if you prefer them to stand upright when the plants are young. Typically, after 2-3 years, the plants are more mature, and the flower stalks will stand more upright. It requires full sun with moist soil and purple flower spikes can reach 2-4 feet high. In wild Florida, they are often found in wet flatwoods, slopes, bogs, savannas, and roadside ditches.
This plant is known by many names - Dense blazing star, Marsh blazing star, Spiked blazing star, and Dense gayfeather.
It is not salt tolerant.
