Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) is a native southern, evergreen to semi-evergreen tree that can grow to a mature height of 50 feet in the north or to 60 feet in south Florida, From June to September it blooms creamy-white, lemon-scented flowers followed by small red seeds which are used by a variety of wildlife. Plant it in full sun or part shade in wet to well-drained sand, loam or clay with an acidic pH. The fruit attracts birds.
