Commonly known as water parsnip or water parsley, is a water-loving perennial of the carrot family that is native to swamps, wet meadows, wet woodlands, stream/pond margins, roadside ditches and muddy shores throughout North America. It is deer resistant! It will grow about 2-6’ tall and needs about 2-3’ width. It needs moist to wet soil, event standing water. This plant loves the water, but don’t let it deter you from planting it in your garden. You can grow in a container that you keep plugged from draining and keep it moist to wet. It will happily grown in average garden soil if kept moist. The small white flowers bloom during the summer. Since it grows quickly it can easily feed hungry black swallowtails. Initially it will grow as a basal rosette and if growing in standing water it will grow as clusters of aquatic leaves.
